ONXY

Onyx is a body-worn interface that provides a multisensory experience with the atmosphere. By wearing the interface, people can explore atmospheric information within a speculative installation and receive visual-auditory feedback about the state of their environment. The design of the interface refers to a sentinel species—the miner’s canary—and uses the behavior of the breathing and singing bird to augment human senses regarding particle concentrations. To this end, environmental data was interpreted as “breathing” by using a feathered, shape-changing structure and as “singing” through data-driven sounds.
